Kyle Eberly: Sr Defense Analyst, ACME General Corp and Founder of Sitreps To Steercos

The Old Grad Story:

Kyle piloted Blackhawks as an Aviator for eight years, before leaving active duty to deepen his understanding of investment banking through a summer internship at Goldman Sachs. After completing his MBA at Carnegie Mellon, Kyle pivoted into consulting at PWC, with a focus on industrial mergers and acquisitions. He recently left PWC for a defense analysis role at Acme General Corp, and runs Sitreps2Steercos, a free advisory resource for transitioning veterans.

Old Grad Knowledge:

You might not have the skills you think you have – you don’t know the culture, the language, the drivers or the interrelationships outside of the Army. It’s almost like leaving the Soviet Union for a Capitalist society; take the time to learn about the private sector from veterans who are working in the spaces you’re interested in. You might not get it right the first time, but you have to start getting the perspectives and experiences to give yourself a fresh start.

Officers are given a pretty good roadmap for a “successful” career; it’s more difficult on the outside. Networking, research and adding value with the right people can help you figure it out.

Our generation doesn’t go to the VFW, we found startups and shape the corporate sector. Reach out to other veterans and veterans’ organizations – there’s a huge network to tap into.
